Im speaking about  norteamerican composer and pianist Louis Marie Gottschalk,  the first USA composer. His history is fascinant, with only 14 years he went to Paris, where he spend his life playing in taberns and brothels, but soon he reaches the fame and beginned to play in concerts saloon, playing his own works and competing with Liszt and Karlbrenner the figures in the epoque. Later he traveled to other countries (including Russia and inclusive Chile -my country- in South America), and finally died tragically in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, at 40 years old, during a concert, because of a peritonitis attack. His compositons are funny, joyful and demoniac, very difficult to play, he was to the piano something similar that Paganini was to the violin, Teresa Carreño was his disciple and she failed when she heard him to play. He mounted at his time massive spectacles similars to Andre Rieu s  shows of to day, and he accumulated an inmense fortune that he spend promptly with women, wine and parties. His more famous works are "The banjo","The Union", "Souvenir of Puerto Rico", "Pasquinade", "Tournament Gallop", etc. Important Gottschalk works performers of to day are Ivan Davis, Eugene List, Leonard Pennario, Philip Martin, etc. Do you like this works? Excuse my english please. oscar.olavarria

Yes, I know him as, I may presume, quite a few other members should at least have heard him and some of his works.

There is a very substantive and growing discography of practically almost anything he composed. Only Hyperion has recorded a staggering 8 CD set of all his Piano Works with P. Martin.

I'm not that thrilled by his works and I found his dexterity Piano works a bit superficial, albeit entertaining enough.

Absolutely! Very entertaining & enjoyable good fun! But some of the best orchestral works are reconstructions because original scores do not exist, like the so-called "symphony" A Night in the Tropics & the delightful Grand Tarantelle for piano & orchestra (rather in the style of the Littolf Scherzo or 2nd mov of Saint Saens 2) splendidly done by Utah/Abravanel on Vanguard with Reid Nibley as pianist. Also a Vox 3 LP set with a talk on the composer by Eugene List, and the amusing Variations For piano & Orch on the Brazilian National Anthem.

I could also add the (very) miniature piano pieces by Cuban born Ignacio Cervantes, very well done by one of my current favourite pianists Juana Zayas (see separate post) on Music & Arts.

Gottschalk

I happen to have an old obscure cd with Gottchalk's piano music, played by Richard Burnett on several vintage pianos (Erard, Broadwood and Graf), issued on the Amon Ra label in 1988.

No idea if you can still get it somewhere. It's fun music indeed and the historic instruments give it an extra dimension.
I should give it a spin myself again too!

...and there is another one, on Bridge, with Lambert Orkis, playing an original instrument of the 1860's. Very interesting and entertaining. However, not that kind of great or profound music.

No, I did not know her. But I know how to use the internet and therefore found another new artist/music. Thank you!

Of course, you don't know her, Grammy. Since you know "how to use the internet", perhaps you may found out, first, that the composer is a male one, as the title of the topic suggests (and his works).

Welcome to the forum, if you plan to stay.

Sorry, English is not my mothertongue and I might have been distracted by HIS second name. And I don't think the sex matters if it's just great music... ;)

Thank you anyway Parla and thanks for welcoming me.

Oh no! You don't have to excuse - there is no problem. Like I said - good music remains good music, no matter what sex! As long as you do not want to sell me a digital watch for rolex prices, there will be no reason for feeling sorry ;)

The "obscure" CD referred to above is by Richard Burnett and is still available from the record company Saydisc. http://www.saydisc.com/

It is on their Amon Ra label, Catalogue number CD-SAR32. And very good it is too!

Contact them to buy a copy and you will enjoy some marvellous music, I have no doubt.
