RE: Forthcoming Releases

Very happy to see that Brilliant are not just releasing budget price re-releases but also some original (I think!) recordings. Have already ordered:

Gernsheim - Violin Sonatas

I am looking forward to putting together some playlists including these with works by Brahms and Schumann.

RE: Forthcoming Releases

Maybe this has already been mentioned - I got lost in the meaningless ramblings about list or not list. But to my surprise I saw that EMI now has re-released Magnards delightful opera Guercoeur. I have been looking for it for years, but all I've found was an out of copyright download, recorded in 1951.

Naupilus, Brilliant has long time ago initiated its own original recordings. There are quite a few, if not plenty, recordings, some of which are worthwhile, including the Gernsheim you chose.

Supraphon has already released (outside UK) the complete Nocturnes by Chopin with Moravec, in an old recording of 1965. In UK, it should come in late July.

In the old music repertory, the great French label Ricercar has released a very fascinating World Premiere recording of the quite interesting composer of the 15th century, namely Adriaen Willaert's Vespro della Beata Vergine. In UK, it is expected to be released in about late July.

RE: Forthcoming Releases

In Continental Europe, a new quite promising Lohengrin from Pentatone has already been released. It's the new installment of the Marek Janowski's Wagner live series of all the major Wagner's Gesamtwerke (Complete Works).

In the title role, the new big voice named Klaus Florian Vogt, while Elsa is portrayed by the interesting Annette Dasch. In the other roles, some less well-known household names.

For the 20th century fans, Dacapo has already released (not yet in UK) the Chamber Symphonies by Vagn Holmboe, while the very good Russian label Caro Mitis has released a very intriguing (and interesting) SACD with the title "Teacher and Student", with piano compositions of Taneyev (teacher) and Alexandrov (student). The soloist is the very solid pianist Victor Bunin.

The recordings of all the above are stunning!

Parla, have you heard the new Lohengrin yet?  If so how does it compare with the quite recent version from Bychkov, with Johan Botha?

Parla,

I believe that these are the same recordings that have been out for many years (released by Connoiseur Society originally) which have been available from WEA/Elektra Nonesuch. Here's a link to it on Amazon UK.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nocturnes-Complete-Frédéric-Chopin/dp/B000005J03/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1340632888&sr=1-1

Don't you already own these?! [Just teasing you a bit here.... ;-)] I do, and love them! :-)

Best wishes,

Petra

Yes, Petra is correct they have been available for some time. I have the Nocturnes, probably the greatest ever complete set, on 2 Warner Apex CDs but don't know if that's still available and VAI have issued some of the Connoisseur Society recordings including the Ballades, again arguably the finest ever. They are probably still available and VAI have also done a disc of Beethoven sonatas, one with 4th concerto and a double CD of French keyboard pieces plus a mixed recital disc.

The Philips Great Pianists discs included a selection of his Warner, Vox, Connoisseur and Dorian recordings.

A truly great pianist. Great Schumann concerto & Franck Symphonic Vars on Supraphon. I was thinking of looking into his Mozart concertos on Hannsler with the ASMF; anybody know them?

Hi 33! Hope that all is well?

Regarding that CD, did you perchance notice my link? :-)

I too love his recordings! He's quickly become one of my favorite pianists. I have many of his recordings but not all. I also love his Debussy and Ravel and Franck and Janacek in particular. I haven't heard his Mozart concerti, but I've been wanting to buy them. Have you heard his recording of the Dvorak piano concerto? Another one on my "wants list". BTW, the first CD that I heard (and purchased) of his was his "Live in Prague" one; it hooked me! Do you know that one? :-) Is that the "mixed recital" disc to which you were referring 33?

Best wishes,

Petra

Petra, 33lp, yes it is the old "Connoiseur Society" release, but, as Supraphon claims, in a "more colourful remastered sound, which brings out to the full the wealth of tone colours of Moravec's piano" (a Steinway, in New York, and a Boesendorfer at Vienna's Konzerthaus). I haven't got them yet. I just noticed the new release of Supraphon and I pre-ordered it.

Chris, I listened to the first Act of the new Lohengrin and I believe it is superior to Byckhov, in sound and in performance. Janowski's conducting is more secure and Wagnerian, while K.Fl. Vogt sounds more polished than Botha. The recording is also more focused, somehow more detailed and a bit more spacious.

With such limited space left on my iPod I am holding off the Janowski Wagner cycle (I would rather save up for Keilberth) but for those that are interested the is a 40 min interview on YouTube regarding Janowski's Wagner cycle and his concept of Wagner - you can find it here.

RE: Forthcoming Releases

New releases that are whetting my appetite at present:

Klughardt & Gernsheim on Sterling

More Nono on Neos

Kabelevsky Piano Concertos on CPO

Don Giovanni on DG (with D'Arcangelo, Damrau, DiDonato, Villazón & Erdmann)

Elektra on LSO Live

The last two will have to be indulgences - I have too many Don Giovanni recordings to admit whilst the Elektra (Gergiev) would be a sentimental buy. On our last trip to Europe I dragged my seven month pregnant wife along to the concert where this recording was made, together with a performance of Tannhauser in Berlin. The bump moved on both occasions - thought I think he was more impressed with Strauss than Wagner. Personally I thought the Gergiev performance was resonable, but suffered from the same affliction that affects his worst efforts - the impression that the whole thing has been put together in a hurry.

Parla,

I know, thanks, I read their description. I'll be interested to read the reviews to see whether or not they do much to the recordings and how well they do it. I know that the old Connoisseur Society recordings are wonderful. I don't know how much "tinkering around with them" WEA did and also what new advances in technology are now available to Supraphon since WEA first put them out. Do you own the WEA ones so as to be able to compare? Or perhaps the Connoisseur Society LPs Parla? Or will this be your first foray into this wonderful pianist's recordings?

If the former, which other albums of Mr. Moravec's do you know and appreciate?

Best wishes,

Petra

No, Petra, these Nocturnes are going to be my first with Moravec. I trust Supraphon has done a better job than the previous recordings.

I have some Moravec's recordings, though I do not consider myself an excited fan of his Art. I appreciate his "Live in Brussels" (on Supraphon), the Brahms Piano Concertos (on Supraphon too), the Beethoven's 4th along with Frank's Symphonic Variations and Ravel's Piano concerto (on Supraphon too), Chopin's Scherzi & Mazurkas (on Supraphon as well) and Mozart's Piano Concertos 20, 23-25 (on Piano Classics).

Hi Parla.

Sorry, but I haven't heard the term "excited fan" before? Perhaps you might be so kind as to translate that into American English? I'm guessing that you mean something like "I enjoy his music somewhat but am not a huge fan of him"? Or perhaps you are like this about all performers and groups? Though you did seem to be rather enthusiastic about the Prazak Quartet? Anyway, I think that his best albums are still ahead of you (starting with the Nocturnes) IMHO. There are also many other people who also think that they are the best in the world (or among the best). I'm just so sorry that I came to hear his recordings for the first time so late in his career. I believe that he's approximately 82 now? Looking forward to hearing your reactions to them.

Best wishes,

Petra

p.s. Thanks for reminding me (along with 33lp) that I still need to get his Mozart! Also, since you seem to enjoy Supraphon recordings, I highly recommend the 4-CD set they've put out of some other Moravec recordings (also available individually). The titles start out with "Ivan Moravec Plays...." His Debussy is exquisite too. Anyway, enjoy! :-)
