Does anyone have the following recently released collection of Giuseppe Taddei recordings just released on 4 CDs called the Darling of Italy.  Tesco gives track listing but little else.  I can't find any information about conductors and whether these are live or recorded.  £7 isn't much but it's a lot for poor quality!

The CD title sums up this great singer - more respected in Italy than by the recording companies as a whole.

Mr Bennett - you're a fan aren't you - have you heard this collection yet?

Helps a lot - it's basically highlights from the CETRA recordings and pre 1960 EMI recordings.  Seems like a bargain.  Duly ordered.

Many thanks

Many thanks for highlighting this (and to Adrian for the link). I think I'll order it as well. Taddei was a fine singer who had an impressive career, but is comparatively neglected these days, it seems to me. I've always liked his Scarpia in the Decca/Karajan recording (though I'm not generally a fan of HvK). I've got a few of the complete performances from which the excerpts are taken, but at that price it's worth getting for the rest.

Taddei is very much admired by people who know about dramatic quality of voiced artists as this great baritone was. Soft vibrato was his only imperfection, specially notorious when older (too young I got shocked when I saw him in person in 1958, as Iago besides Vinay and Becham, and heard that vibrato; after years of llistening and getting experience, I strongly admire Taddei as one of the best dramatic baritone [see his two Falstaff). As for this peculiarity, I strongly adice to try to listen his mono Scarpia, having to accept 'rare' Mr. Poggi (as is the case in the wonderful La Bohème with Scotto and Gobbi. Precisely the 'lack of press' of Taddei, as compared with other artists that I will not name, speaks of his aristocratic person.

The mono Scarpia you mention, sachs, or rather Tullio Serafin's recording of Tosca with Stella, Poggi and Taddei is none too shabby. This was originally recorded for the Philips label and had a new lease of life on CD a couple or so years ago as a Pocket (Book?) Opera recording. Sorry, too tired or too lazy at the mo to go upstairs to check. I wasn't expecting anything sensational when I bought it but was pleasantly surprised. Serafin conducts the score with his customary expertise and while there's nothing revelatory about the performance it is certainly a worthwhile version to hear now and again. Taddei's Scarpia was finer, to my ears, than he was on the more famous version of Tosca recorded just a few years later under Herbert von Karajan and Stella and Poggi provide solid portrayals of the other main roles. It doesn't measure up to the classic versions available, however, each of the main protagonists are in much fresher vocal estate than more illustrious names on disc. Thanks for the reminder.
