No don't talk to me later, just sod off back to the ether from which you came.

You come in and out of this site to the extent that I doubt even you know whether you are coming or going.

700+ posts from an utter idiot with nothing worthwhile to say. He is a true Trojan: an unwelcome piece of malware.

Has it never occurred to you that the reviewer, in this case Stephen Johnson, may be right?

He did apologise for not including many recordings and gave a fair assessment of those he did include so what's your problem, merely that he plumped for LSO Live!?

Did it ever occur to anyone that Bryce Morrison might me wrong in his evaluation of the Bronfman/Hatto recording. Liking one but not liking the other when they were the same recording. The BBC promoting British music by British artists on British recording label, all very British what. You may still swallow everyting you are told by the BBC but don't expect eveyone else to!!!

The Hatto scandal does not support your "argument."

Oh, I see, it was because said judgement was on the Beeb and not on Fox  News or the like that is the basis of your objection.

By that ridiculous criteria they should have reviewed extant recordings of, say, Vaughan Williams 5th to make it an all British programme, and continue for ever more.

You must try and come in from out of orbit otherwise you'll catch cold or worse.

Bryce Morrison was a regular reviewer on Building a Library. He reviewed a work by a non British pianist and thought little of it and then reviewed the same recording but this time thinking it was by a British pianist and loved it. I think that says a lot about the BBC's attitude to promoting British performers and labels. He was one who got caught out, how many more regularily pass off sub-standard British performances as being the ultimate choice. Remember there was only one phone hacker at the News of the World, until it was exposed as widespread.

There is no requirement that you read my posts, but I love your juvenile replies. You still haven't explained your rationale for denigrating Chicago Symphony's past and present conductors. I await your response.

Tchaikovsky's 'Polish' symphony, but will the BBC go for a Russian or a Polish Orchestra. Did Colinsky Davidov not record this with the LSO. You can't get much more russian than SW6 on a saturday afternoon. Come on the LSO you know you can do it.

Later they appointed octogenerian Monteux for whom they played superbly and made some  wonderful recordings including Daphnis & Chloe (one of John Culshaw's favourite recordings), Dvorak 7, Beethoven and arguably the greatest Enigma where Decca's sound fully expoited Monteux's antiphonal violins which is surely how Elgar intended it to be heard.  He also took them to Vienna and there's an excellent live (presumably genuine unedited "live") performance of Tchaikovsky 5 and the first PC with John Ogdon on a couple of Vanguard CDs in good sound.

Couldn't agree more, 33lp. Those are all great recordings. Monteux's Elgar's Enigma is among the best (maybe the best Nimrod around?), his Daphnis & Cloé is refined but his Beethoven's 7th is in another league, one of my favourites: just notice how the LSO literally catches fire at the end of the allegro con brio: impressive!

Monteux is one of the few french conductors who produced convincing recordings of LvB's symphonies, imo. His 3rd with RCO is simply outstanding, my favourite and one of the best alongside Klemperer's and Reiner's.

I've been enjoying those recordings for years. Few months ago I bought those Tchaikovsky recordings on Vanguard: good sound and great readings too: recommended. But my Monteux's desert island disc is his LvB's 3rd w/ RCO (Philips): a must recording for any serious collector.

BTW, his Brahms is also very good: he left a nice recording of Brahms' 2nd symphony, again w/ LSO (Philips).

Fantastic! four weeks to go to the start of the olympics and the LSO have done it again. Who would have thought. HOWEVER you couldn't have written the script to this one, unless you were a BBC reviewer of course. The LSO take the gold and are a clear first choice, but wait, the recording is not available on CD, don't worry just pick another completely different performance that just happens to be on BBC Legends, that will do, just make your cheques payable to the BBC (they will probably take cash in brown envelopes as well). The BBC, making Britain proud to be British while they take your cash.

Turned on Building a Library this morning, it was listed as the proms, and what proms were they playing, yes you've guessed it - The British London BBC proms.

Are there any others then?

A British broadcaster on a British radio station playing to a largely British audience plays music from the biggest British based festival of music.

Only right and proper in my opinion.

Agreed Chris! :-) Though I also like listening to some of the concerts too (unfortunately over my computer) and I'm here in the States...and not British! So...thank you Britain!

Best wishes,
