Hello--
Any word on John Ogdon recordings being released this year, his 75th birthday? I remember 23 years ago that he was to have recorded all the Rachmaninoff (Rakhmaninov for you Brits) Piano Concertos with Rozhdestvensky and the LSO. Only the first and second Concertos were released. Perhaps EMI and Collins Classics can come to a licensing agreement? Also--might there be more unreleased recordings, like the Reger Piano Concerto with Revenaugh?
Thanks,
Lloyd Arriola

Hi, Lloyd !  I don't  know about that, but five years ago Ogdon's 70th birthday was commemorated by EMI Classics with a classy 4-CD Anniversary Edition. Very well presented and featuring liner notes by Gramophone contributor Jeremy Nicholas, this set brought some staples of Ogdon's repertoire, like the Tchaikovsky First, the Rachmaninov Second and the Bartók First concertos, as well as some rarer stuff, including Liszt's Rapsodie Espagnole in the Busoni arrangement and Ogdon's own Piano Concerto and Piano Sonata. I don't think EMI will repeat the effort this time, but some other label might take up the challenge and issue more of the great pianist's output. Or so I hope !

Regards,

CPJ

Hello!
Yes, I have that set. EMI is going through quite the change, but for those of us allergic to illegal downloads and the vagaries of iTunes, I would still like to see a John Ogdon Edition, as he recorded so extensively (if variably). Those Rachmaninoff recordings late in his life would be fabulous. I missed their first issue ten years ago. And there were tons of unreleased things--Liszt Transcendental Etudes, Delius Piano Concerto "live". I bet there is a ton of radio material--Beethoven Hammerklavier Sonata or some Busoni. I will hope, even if it looks dim. I just don't want a pianist whose legacy is really wonderfully enthusiastic and ecstatic love for music to disappear. Any other people out there besides me and Carlos agree?!?

Messiaen's Turangalila Symphony was broadcast from the Albert Hall on Wednesday 6 August 1969 with the  BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Charles Groves with John Ogdon (Piano) and Jeanne Loriod (Ondes Martenot).

You can hear this performance  by following the link below

where, on another page,  you will also find the Karajan Mahler4 with the BPO referred to in another thread and lots, lots more

Wow, Clive, thank you. I didn't know Ogdon played TURANGALÎLA. and on my birthday, no less--a nice gift. Ogdon's breadth of musical interests never fails to astonish me.
