Don't know whether or not anyone started a thread on this (if so, I can't find it!), but I thought that you might be interested in sharing your latest finds/purchases (CDs, LPs, DVDs, etc.) of classical works here for others to view and/or ask questions about. :-)

I visited a local record shop today (They carry a mixture of used with a bit of new recordings) and came home with:

1) Rautavaara's Violin Concerto, Isle of Bliss, and Angels and Visitations with Segerstam on Ondine
2) an unopened copy of Madama Butterfly (RCA Living Stereo-hybrid SACD) with Leontyne Price and Leinsdorf
3) Ute Lemper's new CD called "Paris Days, Berlin Nights"
4) an Olympia CD of G. Enescu - Symphony No. 2 and Two Romanian Rhapsodies with Andreescu
5) an unopened CD of Magnus Lindberg - "Sculpture", "Campana in aria", and "Concerto for Orchestra" with Oramo and the Finnish RSO
6) a BIS CD of Sallinen - "Sym. No. 4," "Shadows", and "Sym. No. 5" with James De Priest and the Malmo SO
7) And another Sallinen CD of "Sym. No. 8" and his "Violin Concerto" on CPO with Ari Rasilainen, etc.

8) Jorge Bolet playing Chopin's 24 Preludes and 4 Nocturnes on London

9) "Music of Takemitsu" with Rudolf Werthen and I Fiamminghi on Telarc.

Lots of modern/contemporary recordings (for the most part) for me to exlore--hopefully "happily" so!

And you?

Best wishes,

Petra

Could Luca (or someone else) please remove one of these threads (I accidentally duplicated it!) Plus, how do I edit a posting once posted. I wanted to delete/fix something!

Thank you!

Best, Petra

You can easily edit something (I've done it often) by clicking on the "Edit" in blue in the lower right corner of your post. In fact, I just did it when I noticed a misspelled word.

Bliss,

The only options that I see for my original post (and I'm logged in here) are "Reply" and "Quote" in the lower right-hand side. :-(

But thank you anyway!

Best, P.

Petra01: Yes, I see the same thing on my earlier post. There must be a time limit to do the "Edit" thing.

Bliss,

Boy, and I tried fixing it right away! Well, we'll see what Luca or someone else from "G" has to say (or can do for my posting)!

But thanks again for chiming in; that was very kind of you!

Best, P.

Petra01: Let me know if you find out the answer. I just noticed that one of my posts today still has "Edit" and so do some of my older ones.

Whoops! Sorry Chris, I missed your posting! Perhaps I should have added on (to my original posting) something like "and why you decided to purchase them?" ...drat!

Anyway, so please tell me more about the Albion recording. When is it from, etc.? I really love a number of Vaughan Williams recordings, so you've intrigued me! a:-)

And I don't know anything about Elizabeth Maconchy either? I'll take a look a Wiki after dinner.

Do you play the flute by the way? Or just enjoy it?

Best wishes,

Petra

RE: Latest Acquisitions

You should be young, Petra. I used to listen to this "modern/contemporary" repertory (however not exclusively or predominantly) up to my late 30s (maybe early 40s). As you grow older, you may realize that time is of grave importance and you have to stick to the very great Classical Music.

However, anything can go as long as you can get the best out of it. By the way, go a bit "backwards": listen to, indulge in the "Greats" of Baroque, namely the Bachs (father and some of the great sons), Vivaldi, Buxtehude, Les Couperins, the Scarlattis (Domenico is the predecessor of any Pianist composer of the future), Rameau, Monteverdi, Gesualdo, Biber, Schutz and so many others. They will help you to comprehend better what has happened in the past and how this Music has been developed in the late 18th, 19th and, in some cases, even in the 20th century.

Hi Parla. I do go "backwards" too. I'm happily exploring many different centuries. :-)

And regarding the "You should be young", you know, I keep telling that to "the Big Guy"! LOL ;-)

Best wishes,

Petra

Hi Petra!

That looks like an interesting shopping trip! I do hope you saved enough to buy a couple of bottles of wine to go with all that music.

The Magnus Lindberg Sculture was on a televised prom a couple of years ago. I found it an interesting piece -  bit Lutoslawskian - but OH found it noisy!

I'd like to hear the Rautavaara violin concerto. The only CD I have is before the Icons etc...on Ondine. I'll put that on my list! He is noted for haunting string lines I believe.

Happy listening.

RE: Latest Acquisitions

Shameful to admit but I went seriously over my quota this month while taking advantage of sales on at my usual online store. Awaiting listening time are:

Volkmann - Orchestral Music (CPO)

Debussy - Songs (Maltman, Hyperion)

Strauss - Lieder Vol.3&4 (Hyperion)

Rzewski - The People United Will Never Be Defeated (Hamelin, Hyperion)

Bach - Motets (Gardiner, SDG)

Beethoven - Songs (Hyperion)

Fuchs/Kiel - Piano Concertos (Hyperion)

All I can say is that it is a good job they granted an extra three day holiday here in Rio and that the holiday falls after I hand in the first four modules of my Masters!

Petra

I don't play the flute but I'm a fan of concertos generally whatever the featured instrument(s).

I'm also a British music fan and I have periodic hunts for material I have not heard before or of which I do not have a recording.

Albion Records is the recording label of the Ralph Vaughan Williams Society and you can find out more here:

 http://www.rvwsociety.com/albionrecords.html

Maconchy studied with Vaughan Williams (and others) at the RCM, she is also the mother of Nicola LeFanu.

Hi Mark! I know, I have lots of listening ahead! LOL Oh, boy, do I! The record store basically sells used CDs (though sometimes one can find unopened ones there--sometimes of newly released CDs too). They do also do special orders and carry things like new (and old) vinyl plus CDs of local groups, etc [like lots of independent record stores do these days]. Their prices are always good too [Currently, on average, $8.00 for a single disc]. And they also have things like a frequent shopper card which help us "regulars". :-)

I'll try and give the violin concerto a go today.

BTW, what does "but OH found it noisy" mean?

Chris,

So much for being good for you this month (wasn't that you that said something about not buying any this month?)! Oh, well, I won't tell! LOL I know, it's hard!

Lots of interesting buying for you though. I'm curious, did you end up picking out these ones because they were on your "wants list" and they happened to be on sale? May I ask BTW, which online places do you like to use?

And good luck with your masters!

Oh, and thanks for the explanations re VW. I did end up doing some online poking around at PrestoC and found out more about them and their recordings [Thank you PrestoClassical for your information and the sound bites!].

Have you purchased many of Albion's VW recordings? And if so, any favorites? They look quite interesting. I have a few odd (not meaning strange here!) VW recordings...one from Somm and another off-the-air recording provided by a British friend of mine of a very early (and not released) broadcast with VW himself conducting.

Best wishes,

Petra

RE: Latest Acquisitions

OH found it noisy means my other half -  an expression here in England for one's wife', and sometimes also 'better half' is used in conversation - found that piece a bit too loud and noisy at times!

Sounds like you've got a good local record store there.

Enjoy the CD's!
