Hi all, I have just read the review of the new recording of Lucia di Lammermoor with Natalie Dessay as Lucia. One or two things to mention, the most important being that the reviewer should really check his facts. Although Donizetti originally intended a Glass Harmonica for the Mad Scene, he crossed it out and substituted a flute. This is plainly visible in the autograph score which I studied when I worked at the British Library. Donizetti was a man of the theatre and obviously discovered that it was just not practicable to use the instrument, which is notorious for being out of tune!

Secondly, I really do take objection to how any comparisons with earlier versions are so short these days. I can remember how every recording that the great (not to say unique) Sutherland made was minutely compared to one by Callas and usually found wanting. This review of Lucia with Dessay hardly made any comparisons at all. For instance, does Dessay sing the second act duet with Enrico in the original key as Sutherland and Milnes do on her second recording?

As for the review of the Sydney Lucia with Sutherland from 1986, I fail to hear any beat on sustained notes at all. The final high E flat of the mad scene is truly astonishing for a woman of 60. Most sopranos half her age would kill for such an astounding upper register.

I think the reviewers need to be more fair when they review and make comparisons.

Great magazine though, which I have followed for more years than I care to remember!

No wonder Jack. Magazines, "great" or less, have to assist and contribute to the shrinking recording business and the existing people with influence. I wouldn't mind, but, these magazines claim (or imply) that they have the authority to speak and of course to write.Unfortunately, those who have it, they remain silent or indifferent or go...with the wind!..

I fully agree with you on the Stupenda's unique musical interpretation(s) of Lucia, but, alas, she is gone. Now, we have Natalie and we have to live with that. She is the current "manager" of the work! The ominous thing is that there is no sign that another Sutherland (or a "derivative" of hers) might emerge anytime soon. So we have to learn to live with less, lower the bar and even worse to start believing that Lady Gaga has nothing less than...Callas and her likes. Someone claimed - in these forums - that Brahms and bebop are of the same value!..

Good luck and enjoy!

Sad to say but the review was pathetic. So much could have been said about how Callas and Sutherland changed expectations about how the title role could be interpreted. Lucia is full of tweety bird interpretations from the past before these estimable ladies set down their take on the role. A proper review would have gone in to details. Does Gramophone no longer care?

Perhaps a little harsh to damn the magazine on the basis of one review.  Editorial comment?

I have nothing to add to the Lucia discussion but what is really beginning to intrigue me is what might lie behind Parla's obsession with Lady Gaga.  Fifth or six mention?  Methinks the gentleman doth protest too much.  Hmmm...

First of all, it's her name, Vic. The absolute dominance of the worst kind of kitsch, which, then goes pretty well with what has left to be called "music".

If you are kind enough to find this "Gaga" name simply humorous and her music...what(?), you are a very generous gentleman. Alas, Music and Art in general cannot be.

I'm sure you're right on this one Parla, and thanks for setting my mind at ease. I had thought for a while it was about something much more interesting.  Oh well.

Still, live and let live, eh?

It's not up to me (live and let live), I'm afraid. However, an artist once told me that kitsch is something...beautiful.

So, I'm afraid we have to live with that. (Alas, life is not interesting anymore).
