Mercadante and "I Due Figaro".
Wed, Mar 13 2013, 12:59PM
Do any of you know this opera. It was resurrected and recorded by Riccardo Muti at the 2010 Ravenna Festival and is now available as a 3-CD set. Is it a worthwhile work or just a curiosity?

Thanks a lot, Adrian3. I guess I have to trace it, mostly for the Muti factor...as well.

@ Parla
Yes, I'm mainly interested in this opera because of Muti. What a pity he is recording so little: only one with Chicago so far, and that came out in 2010.

Nobody seems to have ever heard this work. Generally, there is a reason for a composer's neglect so I presume this opera is no great shakes.

It should be more a "curiosity"; possibly a worthwhile curiosity, since Mercadante had talent enough for the theater and he was a gifted melodist and accomplished enough as a musician and composer.
However, I would love to know on which label this 3-CD set is available. Is it a brand new release or a forthcoming one. I have almost any previous works of this rather obscure composer, recorded before (Emma of Antiochia and Il Bravo are among the most interesting ones). I guess for collectors, this new one would be a sort of must.
