I think critics have a lot to answer for. They have more power then we, the classical recordings enthusiasts are prepared to admit.
They come out with the same old tired platitudes, and we like lemmings keep on repeating them, here amongst other places. Nothing is black and white. It is just lazy journalism. For example -
HVK is all surface gloss. (Mahler 9th isn't)
Suisse Romande is a poor orchestra. ( I have countless recordings with Ansermet where they are superb)
Klemperer is slow and turgid. (Don't get me started on that one).
And the worst example is of a critic who gets clever, as in the case of a critique of a work by Erich Korngold. I think for his violin concerto, but it has been rolled out so many times I might have that wrong." More korn then gold". Bet he punched the air when he come up with that one.
