Hello all,

A couple of years ago, I stumbled across this LP with oa Teresa Stich-Randall singing this amazing aria form the Telemann cantata "mache die Tore weit"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5t0MtqYikDc&fmt=18

Is this an one off? Or did Telemann write more Cantata's with gem's like this aria?

Thanks! Rolf

Hi Rolf, I just watched the video that you had posted on You-tube.  Wonderful singing and a lovely cantata!  Thank you so much for doing that! :)  Excellent job with the video work too!  I'll try and keep an eye out for that album.  I looked around for a bit over the net and didn't see any compilations of her work which included that piece [I'm sad to report].  Have you seen any?  I noticed that there is one 4-cd set of her work on Accord.  I'm not familiar with this label are you?

I wish that I could suggest some other cantatas by him; however, I'm afraid that I don't know his music very well.  Sorry to get your hopes up!

Would any of you at Gramophone magazine who cover Telemann for reviews care to comment [if you have a moment] as Rolf has also interested me in Telemann music!

Rolf, may I ask you to respond (if you have a moment) to my question to you that I had posed  a short while back under the "covermounts" question.  Thank you.

And thanks again for your postings of that on You-tube.  When I get a chance, I'll take a look at some of your other ones there.

Best wishes,

Petra

There is a beautiful cantata called 'Du aber Daniel'. The version I have does not sem to be available now. But there is one with Daniel Taylor. The piece has a very beautiful soprano aria and the pairing of Taylor's disc is the same as that older one I have. IE Bach's Actus Tragicus.

He also has a wonderful cantata called Ino.  I had it on an old Turnabout lp but that's over 40 years ago. There may be newer versions around.  Well worth seeking out.

Mache die tore weit was issued on a Carus CD.
But I can not recommend that performance.

What a magnificent voice Stich-Randell had!

Kees.

I have an old Philips LP of three cantatas sung by Hermann Prey, and I don't think it's ever appeared on CD, which is a great pity if true, because they really are enjoyable. They are "Der Schulmeister", "Die Landlust" and, my favourite, "Funeral Cantata for a Sweet-Singing Canary", which is great tongue-in-cheek fun, beginning as it does with the mournful "O weh, mein Canarin ist tot", and containing a splendid "vengeance" aria, its spleen directed at the murderous cat that did the deed. (I think Fischer-Dieskau also did an EMI recording of this,  but memory may be playing me false.)

There may be more recent recordings of these entertaining pieces, but i've never come across any.

Hi Rolf and all the others,

there are quite a lot of cantatas by Telemann, not all of first order but always lovely listening. A couple of years ago I visited a lunch time concert in St Anne's Lutheran Church in London. ThereI listened to an American soprano - the name alas I have forgotten - a lovely voice, in an aria of a Telemann cantata and was immediately smitten with this composer.

Sadly there aren't many good recordings around.

Responding rather belatedly!!! There are indeed Thousands of Telemann Cantatas already OUT There! ANd true to say Thousands still to come into there VERY First Editions before we finally get to hear them!!! You could do well to check out what is on the CPO Label to start with Then Go off to Hänssler & Carus!!! The Toccata Classics Label is currently recording the COMPLETE Harmonischer Gottesdienst Cycle 1725/6, Some of the Fortsetzung Are out there, and NOW ONLY 2 of the lArger Scale Works from whence the Chamber settings of the fortseztung came!!

IT really doesn't help when some Reviewing services simply Stand still/trad water or actually ignore MANY of the Releases...this might be a Distribution Problem or willful exclusion...by some locked in a Bachocentric universe!

This leads me nicely onto the BIG divide that rather silly assessment of the Leipzig post and its consequences...regarding which Composer settled where! Both Graupner & Telemann had at least 1,000 Cantatas a piece when this Job became vacant, thus were tried and tested, Telemann was wearing the Old school Tie,but must have been disappointed the Operatic Side at leipzig was Closed; in any Case GPT played the Hamburg Authorities against Leipzig finally securing a good raise & improvement of his Conditions in Hamburg; with the added attraction of the Opera house! Besides ALL this Telemann and Bach were already Tied by family Bonds, as he stood as Godfather to Cpe Bach in 1714!!

I can safely assure YOU all plenty of interesting musical insights & compositions are still to come to light!!

Just a Brief Point here!! There is actually NO Cat mentioned in this Cantata, this stems from a misapprehension/misunderstanding of the Word in Low German "Streckebeene" which was ONLY recently given the Correct understanding/meaning (IMHO) of Grim Reaper of Spectre of Death!

Really Nice Recording on ACCENT 24199 Secular Cantatas & Suites! TWV55C2 &B8
