In the magazine's new monthly feature, The Trial, we reassess an iconic recording - one of our critics arguing for the prosecution, one for the defence.

First in the dock, Wagner's Parsifal, conducted by Herbert von Karajan with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, released in 1981 on DG. You can read what Mike Ashman (prosecution) and Peter Quantrill (defence) had to say in the May issue of Gramophone. But we'd also like you to continue the debate here - and crucially to cast your vote for or against the recording's iconic status.

Do not know that recording. Have seen it was Gramophone's "record of the year" 1981. But there is always that audiovisual equivalent of the Alexandrian Library called youtube, and am collecting sound clips and pieces to hear some of it:

Great idea, Martin. I don't know this particular recording, but I sense you're going to have your work cut out as a moderator during debates. We've all got our passions and blind spots. If you ever get to the Rattle Mahler 2 ...................

Michel Glotz, supervisor of this recording and Karajan's right hand man throughout much of his recording career, has recently died;

Interesting; no one in my direct neighbourhood has ever heard this record... I am very curious why. Are there any people on the forum who have this Lp/Cd set? For the discussion; here is a larger extract from the end of act II.

This singing, and what I heard recently, see:

makes me think that the pre- 1960 Wagner singers really were "hors de categorie". Agree? or not?

I had bought set on LP when it was first released amid much hullaballoo. It's certainly very beautiful orchestrally, much of it breathtaking.

But I found a sort of creeping blandness, especially in the cases of Kurt Moll's Gurnemanz and Jose van Dam's Amfortas, the latter eschewing any sense of the character's agony, sounding instead merely sorrowful. It's one view, I suppose, but I prefer Falk Struckmann, Fischer-Dieskau and (best of all) George London, especially in the 1962 Knappertsbusch set (Philips).

Not one of my favourite "Parsifal"s on disc, though I respect the consistency of Karajan's vision.

By the way, you can read this month's "trial" here:

Thanks Rolf, that's a stunningly useful thought which I'm ashamed to say hadn't occured to me! Yes, everyone, please do.

I have had this set on vinyl since it was first issued in the 80s. I have never added it to my CD collection owing to my dislike of Peter Hofmann's colourless and unattractive singing in the title role.  Karajan, Moll and van Dam are excellent and the playing of the Berlin Philharmonic is sublime.  Fintan

This sort of this sort thing is a waste of time and space in a serious magazine. Ashman in particular was most irritating in trying (perhaps) to be funny. This recording, like all recordings, has its strengths and weaknesses, so rather discuss them than an artificial prosecution and defence style article. As for the music itself, Parsifal demonstrates the composer's sick mind to the full so it's one piece of music that will not be on my shelf.

I think the perceived blandness is deceptive. I have this recording and also saw both Kurt Moll and Peter Hoffman sing the same roles under Solti in 1979. This recording is certainly more restrained (but NOT supressed!) than Solti but there is an inner tension, and both Hoffman and Moll reflect this without changing their basic interpretations. To me the recording gets better on repeated listening.

To be honest, this new feature is (to agree with Swallow) a waste of 2 pages in the magazine; moreover, neither advocate makes a compelling case for or against Karajan's Parsifal. At its release, it was certainly a recording I would have considered buying and whatever it's failings, having since heard it (but not finally owning it) I give it due respect.

But to the article itself; consider yourself a member of any jury listening to the arguments. I am sure the judge would have frequently interrrupted both defence and prosecution council to seek clarification on their pompous use of terminology and reference and probably dismissed both and told the jury to go home with no case to answer. Knock it on the head and replace this with another gramophone collection. Regards, Myron.

I have listened endlessly to the Karajan over the years and been ever more deeply moved each time.  It is a source of unending joy, profundity, and meaning for me. If a performance has such power to touch our senses so, what's to debate?

My jury verdict is that jury trials of music should receive the death penalty.

If it is not Karajan's recording of Parsifal - then who would it be? I have Jordan with Goldberg; Levine with Domingo; Solti with Kollo; Barenboim with Jerusalem; and Knappertsbusch with Thomas. So Mr. Ashman, who would YOU listen to? I like this kind of comparison of opinions and recordings - but cut out the court lingo!

I haveowned this recrding for some time contrary to many of the previous posts. I first had it in it's commercial cassette issue and eventually bought it on cd. I have always liked but not loved it. I far prefer to listen to Knappertsbusch # 2 or Levine # 1 (Highly under rated I think). i have always wondered why the particular photo of the Salzburg production was chosen for the cover photo. If anyone has seen other photos from that performance they seem to have chosen the ugliest set. Act's 2 and 3 were much more photogenic. I might also mention that having heard an off air recording from the live radio broadcast that happened at the time proves to be a far more dramatac and exciting listen, althoough without the perfection of sound balance acheived in the studio.
