The latest addition to the classical section of my site is Toscanini conducting Beethoven's 6th Symphony "Pastoral" which is one of my father's albums that I grew up with.

"This performance of Beethoven's 'Pastoral' Symphony was given in London with the BBC Symphony Orchestra in 1937 and is widely considered to be Toscanini's finest recording of the work, with the conductor at his most expressive and persuasive." ...says somebody at EMI.

The sound stage is interesting with warm double basses and piercing oboes which takes a little getting used to, but then you are in for a treat, especially the dramatic "storm"!

May I take this opportunity to remind/inform those who have not visited my site recently/ever that it contains:

A superb "Turangalila" with Charles Groves and John Ogdon

Schoenberg's Serenade in a lively version from the Vesuvius Ensemble

(at the moment) Karajan and the BPO with La Mer, Prokofiev 5

Menuhin's Elgar and Casal's Dvorak

RE: Toscanini's "Pastoral"

Dear Clive

Thank you for taking the trouble to offer all this great music online; I shall certainly have a listen to the Toscanini recording and compare it to the Furtwangler from 1947 (ON Audite) I've just played!

regards

Myron
