Thanks for the Brahms rec. Of the 2,352 recordings of these pieces, the most engaging that I have heard are those of Josef Suk (grandson of the composer) and Julius Katchen. Suk/Katchen's recording of the trios is also wunderbar. ( i forget the cellist).

After a very inspiring Mozart week in Salzburg which this year was dedicated to György Kurtág and where the master himself was present all the time on stage and in the auditorium I am almost addicted to his music...
my favorite recordings at the moment are:

ME: I concur: Kurtag is one of the most stimulating discoveries I have made in the last five years. I am now listening to his "Complete String Music," mostly for quartet, which is also terrific.

In Las Vegas, Nevada USA I am listening to Evensong from BBC-4. And just finished reading the online article on Chopin. Grammophone and BBC-4--what joys for us here in the desert wasteland.

I agree in part with your analysis of so called "refined conductors of the Austro-German tradition." I love brass and wish more conductors would bring out their sonorities in Mozart. Nevertheless brass instrument technology has evolved for several reasons of which one is improved sound. I prefer the sound of the modern instrument...nothing more and nothing less with regard to Mackerras and his achievement. Cordially...Lee

Guilini's Don Giovanni;just purchased from EMI's latest opera series. I have chosen other sets in preference to this over the years. After just one listening Waechter seems to shout the title role more than singing it and Scuitti's Zerlina is very lightweight but the rest are admirable. Good to hear Sutherland sing Italian with consonants.

"Carmina Burana" DG/Jochum, I bought the vinyl LP yesterday for £3 in a 2nd hand shop. Always a gamble, but this copy is mint and silent!
It sounds much better than the DG Originals CD.... A rule of thumb is developing here for me...
If it's analogue, play the record!
Also Sargent's EMI "Gondoliers" for £1 (similarly good condition) and Gerhard Husch's 1933 "Winterreise" (£5) Can't really decide in which order to play these two...maybe seperate days is better. Can't really follow "Der Leiermann" with G&S, now, can I?

The eccentric wonders of Noel Mewton-Wood. Died much too young...

Recorded around 1949. The much collected Peter Rybar is the violinist in the 2nd movement.

I am listening Feldman Concertos on CPO
ing to
Love that set.
Put it on my list for tomorrow.
This is what I love about these threads, being reminded of music you've not listened to in ages.
