RE: What are you listening to right now?

Wow! Thanks for the files Otterhouse - I seem to remember hearing this performance many years ago but had long slipped my mind. Lovely performance, shame about Siloti. Wonder how many Gramophiles are currently listening to this same performance? Who's for a Guinness record for simultaneous listening?

Seriously though, what is the Gramophone's view on members sharing out-of-copyright material like this? Shouldn't be any problem, I would think. What though is copyright position on, say, a newlly re-mastered publication of an old recording?

Gramophone's view would be that if something is out of copyright - both in terms of the recording and composition - then it is public domain. Posting or linking to anything in copyright is obviously unacceptable. As for remastering, this is a different matter, so anything actually released within the copyright period, even if the original recording is older, should be treated as in copyright for the purposes of this forum. I would kindly ask for forum members' respect of this rule.

Ok, but what about stuff that has been posted on an artist website? Here is a great Israeli/Dutch pianist called Yoram Ish-Hurwitz, who already got rave reviews on his Iberia SACD:

I think he does not mind if I post this video of Liszt's Sonetta 104 del Petrarca from his website...:

And to stay on topic, listening to it, right now... :)

Yes, you're right Rolf. There's clearly a difference between something an artist has put up on their own website for public listening/viewing, and something someone has posted online without the copyright holders' permission, which is what I was referring to really. Martin

It is just after 9 am here on the island of Maui, Hawai, and it is still raining after a non-stop night rain. My late breakfast music this wet morning is Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1. The pianist is Radu Lupu, with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Zubin Mehta.

I never tire of listening to the Beethoven Piano Concerti. Todays recording was made by Decca at the now unfortunately demolished Kingsway Hall in March of 1979. A warm well defined acoustic, and although a good performance, this lacks the unique sublime quality of the most distinguished performances of this spritely piano concerto.

Tuesday morning I plan to continue listening to another performance from this complete Lupu cycle of the concerti. Enjoy your varied listening days and evenings. Irvine Shamrock.

I am back to listening to the Der Abschied from Das Lied von der Erde. The piano only version with Katsaris on the piano and Thomas Moser and Brigitte Fassbaender. Something to counteract the sunniness of the Arizona spring!

Have you listened to Rattle's Gurrelieder?

No,I have not listened to Rattles Gurre-Lieder,but I would very much want to.The only other Gurre-Lieder I have listened to is Pierre Boulez recording with the BBC SO on Sony.(I have it on vinyl) And I have always thought that this was the ultimate performance,it is really that good. But Levine reveals so much more in the score and his is such a powerful and thrilling performance. But I certainly believe that Rattle is able to give a fantastic performance of this marvellous music. There are also a couple of other interesting recordings of this piece as Abbado,Chailly and Sinopoli.Atlhough I find Levine outstanding it is not the only truth about this music.

Has anyone listented to Zemlinsky's Lyric Symphony? Does it have similarities with Das Lied von der Erde and to the Gurrelieder or am I imagining them? The Lyric Symphony is also set to Chinese poetry like Das Lied. All three seem to have this full, sweeping, late romantic sound to them. Any thoughts?

Sorry to disappoint everyone, but I am now listening to The English Beat - early 1980s ska. My way of clearing my musical palate before listening to more classical.

This evening I have re-visited Ashkenazy's recording of Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No.2 with the LSO and Andre Previn.  Ashkenazy strikes a very good balance between romanticism and clarity and there are moments of real beauty throughout.  Occasionally on other recordings I find Ashkenazy's right hand slightly strident, but the tone is always well controlled on this release and the relationship between piano and orchestra is very successful.

I have also listened to Pappano's 'Tchaikovsky Overtures & Fantasies' disc again.  This is a real favourite of mine and Pappano's measured way with the 'Romeo & Juliet Fantasy Overture' brings the drama out far more effectively than some of the much more indulgent readings out there.

As I am reading and writing am not listeing to anything. But this morning I was listening to first Jon Vickers recital under Serafin. When this LP appeared here in Santiago, Chile, I was the very one only that felt I was in front of one of the most singular singers has ever existed. "E la solita storia" practically shocked every naif opera lover. It's nice to have currently the CD copy. Cheers.
