Author: Bryce Morrison
Her way with the Valses-caprices is scintillating and extrovert, most notably in the second waltz’s swing-high, swing-low teasing sophistication of the hammock tunes then current. She is notably sensitive, too, to the openings of Nocturnes Nos 6 and 13, and to the latter’s anguished utterance; and if her way with the opening of the Theme and Variations is heavy and emphatic, she is entirely responsive to Var 9 and to the final serene valediction. You will hear a far more feline ease and sense of Fauré’s ever-astonishing modulations and harmonic iridescence from Germaine Thyssens-Valentin but Hewitt’s excellently recorded disc (as bright as the playing) provides an invigorating modern alternative.
