I suppose there is no harm in having a good bargain-price version available if it means that these fine examples of Polish late romanticism find a broader audience. And there is certainly nothing about the playing of Karlowicz’s compatriots that should deter anyone from investigating him if they have not already done so. However, nor are there any hidden depths to tease out or interesting different options for interpreters to explore. Antoni Wit takes the Lithuanian Rhapsody and Episode at a Masquerade a little more broadly than his counterparts on Chandos, and there is certainly an attractive raw energy in the Polish playing. But Tortelier and Noseda have nothing to learn from anyone about communicative immediacy, and the BBC Philharmonic seemingly has appetite for everything it gets involved in. Phrase for phrase, solo for solo, tutti for tutti, the Chandos accounts have significantly more richness and refinement, and the sound has greater depth of field than the by no means objectionable Naxos. Turn up the volume control on the new recording in search of comparable opulence and the comparative plainness really hits home. So for my money the Chandos discs are worth every penny extra.
