Perry’s legacy (beyond the Hyperion catalogue) includes the finest recordings ever made of St Paul’s choir and organ. Others have tamed the extravagant acoustic, some have even captured the choir’s excellence, but only Hyperion, while ignoring neither of these inescapable elements, has managed to focus primarily on the music itself. And this disc is no exception. So while Burgon’s Nunc Dimittis (originally made famous by Paul Phoenix and the St Paul’s choir) could be passed off as pseudo-religious easy-listening, here – sung by the whole complement of trebles – it really is revealed to be something almost inspired. Even more powerful are the performances of the bread and butter of any English cathedral choir: hymns, plainsong, and anthems such as the Tallis Salvator Mundi and Ireland’s Greater Love (and surely no recording has ever given that climactic phrase ‘His marvellous light’ such dazzling luminance).
Most impressive of all are two pieces written in response to violent deaths: Mark Blatchly (a former St Paul’s organ scholar) elevates Lawrence Binyon’s rather hackneyed For the Fallen in a truly inspirational setting, while Ian Kellam’s Agnus Dei, written as a memorial for those killed on September 11, encapsulates the conflicting emotions of anger, grief and ultimate calm.
A lasting souvenir of a moving occasion, a fitting tribute to a great man, but above all, fine listening.
