This is a generous and immaculately realised anthology which would surely have delighted Ron Goodwin (who died in January 2003, five weeks short of his 78th birthday). You’ll find all the old favourites here, not least 633 Squadron (that unforgettable main title as well as the love theme), Where Eagles Dare and The Battle of Britain (a six-movement suite from which launches with the splendid ‘Luftwaffe March’, also known as ‘Aces High’).

Other lesser-known nuggets include the grand sweep of the opening titles for Alfred Hitchcock’s penultimate film, Frenzy, the gorgeous main theme for Of Human Bondage (1964) and ‘Belle’s Love Theme’ from Beauty and the Beast (a project particularly close to the composer’s heart).

We’re also treated to the swaggering march from Force Ten from Navarone, as well as miniature suites from Monte Carlo or Bust (fans of Radio 4’s I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue will quickly recognise the trombones’ beery antics) and Clash of Loyalties (a 1983 film starring Oliver Reed about Iraq’s struggle for independence during the 1920s). The disc concludes with a joyous six-minute sequence from Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines. And did you know that the stirring music which introduces the BBC’s coverage of the London Marathon is in fact the main theme from a little-known 1966 movie entitled The Trap?

Rumon Gamba and the BBC Philharmonic tackle all this material with great relish, while the Chandos sound-engineers have a field-day. Altogether a terrific tribute – and great fun, too!
