The Listening Room: Episode 12 (January 12, 2018)

James JollyFri 12th January 2018

Gramophone's weekly playlist of new releases, archive classics and a few tasters from soon-to-be released recordings

Two fine festival orchestras on display - Claudio Abbado's Lausanne Festival Orchestra, now in the care of Riccardo Chailly, playing Stravinsky's Fireworks, and Paavo Järvi's Estonian Festival Orchestra playing Shostakovich's Sixth Symphony: two examples of superior orchestral work. From the archive, the Gramophone Award-winning DG recording of Krystian Zimerman playing a selection of Debussy preludes (including his vision of fireworks). Also on this week's menu, a Baroque rarity by Janitsch and one of the most popular (and loveliest) string quartets - Borodin's Second played with terrific style by the young Escher Quartet. To mark his 75th birthday, Bavarian Radio have released a collection of Mariss Jansons recordings with the Bavraian RSO, and from the set there are some performances that haven't previously been heard - and one of them is Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms - catch up with it here.

Tasters of soon-to-be-released or very new recordings: Christophe Rousset and his Talens Lyriques on top form in Lully, Augustin Hadelich demonstrating great virtuosity and fine musicanship in Paganini, a song from Mark Padmore's second recording of Schubert's Winterreise (this time with the wonderful Kristian Bezuidenhout) and the finale of Mozart's Piano Concerto K503 with Piotr Anderszewski and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, a performance that makes one crave the whole work.
