Concert halls are a refuge from the clamour and noise of the world around us, a place to switch off your phone and lose yourself in music. But the BBC Philharmonic has announced a new app called Notes which is designed to allow the audience to receive live insights into the music as it is being performed.

Audience members will be able to use the Notes app at every single concert that the BBC Philharmonic will give at the Bridgewater Hall next season. BBC Philharmonic Director Simon Webb says that 'It’s a vital step in our mission to cater to all music lovers, so we are keeping new audiences in mind as well as the experienced concert goer'.

Of course, one of the most irritating aspects of smartphone use in concert halls is the light that they emit, which can be distracting for fellow audience members. So those who wish to use the Notes app will be seated in their own area of the hall so as not to distract others.
