musicAeterna's haunting meditation on isolation with the music of Beethoven as backdrop

We all have different experiences of lockdown, quarantine or social distancing, and artists are no exception. But when their voices are silenced they seek new ways to communicate. The conductor Teodor Currentzis and film director Sergey Nurmamed have created a haunting and powerful film, Plan B, that addresses the numerous issues swirling around us. Built around the music of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, with its call for universal brotherhood, Plan B explores this unique period in mankind’s history and grapples with some of the most pressing concerns.

Romeo Castellucci, Peter Sellars, Marina Abramovich, Sasha Waltz, Helmut Lachenmann, Alain Platel, FM Einheit, Lilia Burdinskaya, Matthias Naske, Jochen Sandig and Teodor Currentzis all share their thoughts and emotions alongside many of the musicians who form musicAeterna, but who were prevented from joining their colleagues in the orchestra’s new home, Dom Radio in Saint Petersburg, due to travel restrictions.

Astoundingly filmed and beautifully edited, Plan B is one of the many offerings on musicAeterna.org's digital platform which was launched in late April. It hosts recordings of the best performances by the orchestra and choir (including rare ones), present and past lectures by the Modern Audience Laboratory, interviews, master classes, and podcasts. Members of musicAeterna create their own projects and record chamber concerts specifically for the platform. The content is updated once every two or three days. The platform is supported by VTB Bank.
