BBC Philharmonic to broadcast across seven BBC stations

The BBC Philharmonic will mark its move to its new home at Salford Quays next month with a two-and-a-half week broadcast festival across seven BBC radio stations.

Starting on June 1, as well as appearances on its more usual station of Radio 3, the orchestra will also perform a "Dubstep Symphony" on Radio 1 and Radio 1Xtra, filmscores on Kermode and Mayo’s Film Review on Radio 5 Live, West End musical numbers on Radio 2, Sunday Worship on Radio 4, and premiere a new work on Stuart Maconie’s Radio 6 Music show.

The performances will showcase the acoustics of the BBC Philharmonic’s new studio at MediaCityUK, for listeners both on the radio and live in the studio - 3700 people will be able to watch the performances, with a third of tickets being reserved for Salford residents.

MediaCityUK is the latest major addition to the Salford Quays development, based around the old Salford docks built near the end of the Manchester Ship Canal. Opened in 1894 and once among the country's busiest, industrial decline in the region led to the docks closing in 1982. Within three years a major redevelopment plan was put together, which by the early 21st century included the Imperial war Museum North and The Lowry art gallery and theatre, as well as apartments, shops and restaurants.

Five major BBC departments will be moving to MediaCityUK from London. The BBC Philharmonic doesn't of course have as far to travel, just from its previous base in the centre of Manchester. But the move is more symbolic than being merely a change of location – since 2007 the orchestra has had an official link to Salford, the city becoming the focus of the orchestra’s work with schools, community groups and young musicians. The orchestra’s main concerts, however, will remain in Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall.
