The choir of Llandaff Cathedral in Wales has released the first CD on its own label.

Composers featured on the disc include Stanford (Te Deum in B Flat, and Ye choirs of new Jerusalem), Brahms (How lovely are Thy dwellings fair), and Francis Jackson (Evening Service in G) among others. The recording, conducted by Richard Moorhouse, cathedral organist and master of choristers, is entitled ‘Majestas’, in reference to the Jacob Epstein sculpture of Christ in Majesty which soars above the nave.

Adam Poole the director of the recording project, said: 'The last 10 years have seen a transformation of the Llandaff sound, which is showcased now for the first time ever on a recording. The vocal sound is a youthful, bold, energetic expression of the best talent available in Wales.

'This new sound is complemented by the organ, designed for the special and somewhat complex acoustics.' The label will offer a showcase for both: 'We want the world to be able to see and hear what we do,' added Poole.

The cathedral's last recording was seven years ago, since when the cathedral has installed its new Nicholson Organ, which features on the new recording. The cathedral is still fund-raising for the completion of the organ, which, boasting a total of 4870 pipes, the cathedral describes as 'the largest, wholly-new, British built organ to be commissioned in a UK cathedral for nearly half a century'.

All the profits from the recording are being given to support African charities. A second disc from the label is due in May, and in the coming year the cathedral is planning to offer live broadcasts online. For more information about the recording, visit Llandaff Music.
