The annual awards for live music-making will take place in May

The Royal Philharmonic Society (RPS) has announced the nominations for its 2014 Music Awards. The RPS Music Awards seek to recognise the very best in live classical music-making in the UK with categories including 'Audiences and Engagement', 'Learning and Participation' and 'Concert Series and Festivals', and many of those nominated will be familiar to Gramophone's readers.

The nominees for the Ensemble award are the Academy of Ancient Music (whose recent recording 'The Birth of the Symphony' was well received in our November issue), BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra (who made valued contributions to Alison Balsom's 'Seraph', a recording which won an Editor's Choice), London Contemporary Orchestra and London Philharmonic Orchestra (whose recording of Julian Anderson's orchestral music was an Editor's Choice in the January issue).

The composers nominated in the Large-Scale Composition category are Sally Beamish (for Flodden), George Benjamin (for Written on Skin) and David Matthews (for A Vision of the Sea), whilst Sir Peter Maxwell Davies and Sir Harrison Birtwistle - both celebrating their 80th birthday this year - have received nominations in the Chamber-Scale Composition category alongside Richard Baker and James Clarke.

The ceremony takes place at the Dorchester Hotel in London on May 13 and full details of all of the nominations are available at the RPS's website.
