Sir Karl Jenkins is preparing to conduct a performance of The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace in Berlin to commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War.

Welsh channel S4C will broadcast the performance in a programme entitled Cyngerdd Heddwch Berlin on Armistice Day, Sunday, November 11.

The performance is the highlight of the ‘Sing for Peace Concert’ to be staged nine days earlier at the Berlin Mercedes-Benz Arena.

The concert on November 2 will bring together The World Orchestra for Peace and 2000 singers from 30 countries under the conductorship of the great composer to perform the multi-faith, multi-lingual work where the text of the Catholic Mass is combined with other religious and historical sources, including the Mahabharata and the Islamic call to prayer.

The performance will be unique with a specially commissioned war archive film reinforcing the narrative of the work projected onto five screens – the build up to war, war itself and the consequences of war.

New languages will be added for this historic performance when Yumeji Matsufuji sings the original Japanese words of poet, activist and survivor of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Toge Sankichi. One movement will be performed in the Welsh language by Leah-Marian Jones and German text being used for some other choral movements.

The S4C programme will also show highlights from the first part of the concert and take a behind-the-scenes look at the preparations for the big night, which is being staged under the patronage of the German Commission for UNESCO.

Cyngerdd Heddwch Berlin will be broadcast on November 11 at 7.30pm and online on demand. Available with English subtitles.
