The death of conductor Mariss Jansons last week affected many orchestras, musicians and devoted listeners around the world, but for Amsterdam's Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra it was a particularly heavy blow, as Jansons (who first conducted the orchestra in 1988) had been the orchestra's chief conductor from 2004 to 2015 and thereafter their conductor emeritus. The orchestra have paid a very moving tribute to Jansons by performing one of his favourite encores, Sibelius's Valse triste, in an empty Concertgebouw hall.
