The shortlist for the 2010 New Music Awards has been unveiled, and includes a “satellite symphony” delivered through an iPhone app and a work based on the rotation of the stars around the Celestial North Pole.
The award, supported by the PRS for Music Foundation, was launched to offer the music and sound art world something similar to visual art’s Turner Prize. Judges this year include composer and pianist Michael Finnissy, pianist and conductor Joanna MacGregor, and music journalist Paul Morley, while a public vote will also be taken into account. The winning project – which receives £50,000 – will be announced on September 16 at London’s Serpentine Gallery.
