So, if the experts here don't mind a classical "newbie" piping in from time to time, I'm "all in."

Welcome Lance.  As you have already discovered, there's the full range of experience and expertise here and it's a great source of information for those like us, still on a learning curve.   The temperature goes up every now and again, and some idiosyncrasies can provoke sharp exchanges - but that's life!   It annoys some, but perhaps generates interest from others (hence my question to moderators (unanswered, politically).

As a "newbie" your journey of exploration into this great musical field would be as welcome as anything else here.  Enjoy it.  And share it!

Vic.

RE: Healthy forum?

I'm not sure how healthy a forum can be when it has such heavy handed moderation sometimes.

I've seen posts and even entire threads disappear with no explanation.

RE: Healthy forum?

Hello Phileas,

Though house rules do not allow discussion in the forum itself about why a post has been removed (though we can discuss it by email), on a general note I'd take issue with the notion that our moderation is heavy handed. We only remove a post if it's legally problematic or offensive - and I can't recall the last time I permanently took down an entire thread. And when we do so, I hope most other forum members would approve of our action.

Thanks Martin, email sent to gramophone.online@haymarket.com.

I too have sent an email, Phileas, probably with the same concerns and question as yourself.  My continued presence here depends on the answer I receive.

Reply received.  Misunderstanding / mistake sorted.  Thread in question reinstated.  Confidence restored.  Thanks Martin (and Phileas).

Vic.

RE: Healthy forum?

As a relatively new poster to this forum, I have to say that I wish I had joined in before. My perception of the forum as a fortress for highbrow conversation and unforgiving intellectualism hasn't been realised. I am delighted by the informality and friendliness of other posters.

Long may this continue.

RE: Healthy forum?

Is Andrew Everard still around? His censoring and smart-alecky comments drove me away. Also some of the comments from Dr. Brodsky. Remember him?

If you liked Dr. Brodsky you'll love Devon Farmer.

To be fair Tagalie, either the west country air or a change in medication has meant that the posts from the forum's own Lon Chaney have calmed down somewhat.
