It's a delightful observation by Mr. P, founded on rare self-awareness I would say.

Private messages have little to do with Facebook. They invite dialogue, while Facebook is a world of everyone talking and nobody listening.

I have to question your claim that serious friendships don't result from internet contact, Ted. Probably more people are meeting future spouses this way than any other these days, and from personal observation I'd say the failure rate of such relationships is no worse, probably better, than those arising from long-traditional contacts.

Alas, Vic, the BP era was all too short-lived.

Beneficial but uninvited.

I guess, Tagalie, the "future spouses" resulting from "internet contacts" is the outcome of "meetings" -mostly- through some "agencies", who provide these kind of services, and not of Private Messages of uninvited, unknown (internet) guests.

Personally, I'd rather see an ignore button, to intrusive members

Actually, I gather the 'future spouses' arrange their own 'meetings' having culled their 'contacts' from a 'list' of potential 'matches' without 'agency' intervention. Very 'similar' to the 'process' of 'narrowing down' the 'great unwashed' congregation of 'forum contributors' into a 'short list' of those with whom you'd like to 'correspond' and those whom you'd 'run a mile' to avoid, i.e. the 'private message' process.

..."list of potential matches

..."list of potential matches"..."their own meetings". I see...the like-minded issue comes again. It works in alliances, political cooperations and so on, but, I guess a marriage can be or become...anything.

Those professors didn't teach irony obviously.

The good ones can teach irony discreetly, but not harmony obviously (at least in Bolero - yesterday). Perhaps not-so obviously....

Only messages

Parla quote:

'As I have said, quite a few times on various occasions in this forum, we are here mere "shadows"... Let's stay here as we have always been'.

We are all anonymous shadows in a virtual world. There is no identity, only the message...

If there are only messages Parla, how come you don't like messages?
