Suggestion: New forum for streaming services

I suggest that there should be a new forum created for discussion of the various streaming services that are available.

I know that Gramophone seems to endorse Qobuz, but there are several others with various pros and cons.

The forum rules would need to make clear that any discussion of whether or not streaming is beneficial to the music industry should remain on the general forum.   This new forum should be for those who enjoy the new streaming services.

Suggestion - Question.

I guess and suggest that your "suggestion" should be approved by the esteemed publication first. In my view, even a thread with imposed rules by the initiator could be enough (there have already been some). As for where the discussion may go, without strict moderation, one cannot avoid or always dictate the course of the development of a thread.

Out of idle curiosity, if there is a new "forum", how many threads one may invent to justify its existence?

Hi Parla, and many thanks for the reply.

Of course my suggestion would need to be approved by the publication, but the purpose of my post was to put that process into motion, including the posting rules that I mentioned.

I don't understand the final paragraph of your post.

Clarification(s) - Facts and figures.

My last paragraph has to do with the actual purpose of creating a new "forum" or sub-forum within the Gramophone forum. The other "forums" (or categories in the G forum) are of general and quite broad nature (General discusssion, Recordings etc.). So far the rather few threads on the streaming services move on quite similar single digit subjects. Of course, if and when the streaming services replace completely the recordings in the form of CD/SACD/Blu ray (or downloading), then, I guess the "Recordings" forum might be replaced by the "Streaming services".

Finally, for the time being, one has to consider also the number of people who nowadays participate in the Gramophone forum (unfortunately, the active members -now- are between 3 to above five...occasionally). Anyway, this is a New Year. Let's see.

wihtin existing framework?

A separate forum for a new medium may be of only temperary interest, just like separate forums for lp's and cd's may have been meaningful for a brief period in the early eighties, but not thereafter. I think within a few years streaming will be the only medium left.

The technicalities of equipment may be discussed in the gear section, if there is much left to discuss now that Sonos, Airplay and Chromecast have made it so easy.

Repertoire, sound quality and user interface may be of more complex interest, however. Waiting for a new forum is one way, but may take a while. Another would be to open a new thread in the general forum. If management decides that a new forum would be appropriate, the thread could always be moved there. I certainly have quite a few questions about the different services, now that I have started streaming (and loving it).

Willem

Hi Willem,

Hi Willem,

I mainly agree with your comments about streaming, especially the "loving it" bit, though I don't think it will oust other media within "the next few years".

I don't think posting in the general forum will ever work well, because posters who dislike streaming will remain perfectly entitled to make negative posts which may stifle the debate.

So I think a streaming forum with set rules is the best approach.  I have now contacted Gramophone about this, let's see what happens.

Don't hold your breath. For reasons that defy all logic and commercial sense, Gramophone have let this forum go to wrack and ruin. With just a tiny outlay in terms of effort and expense, they could have had a thriving community of enthusiasts. Very odd indeed. I can only assume they were chasing short-term sales targets, with little interest in the gains that are now being exploited by other parties.

any news?

I wonder if there has been a response from Gramophone. If not, I suggest we open a thread ourselves. I don't mind if there is a bit of questioning whether streaming is at all attractive, but I also hope that it will mainly be about getting the most from it.

new democratic thread

Good proposal Willem.

Everybody welcome, long live democracy.

Threads and Democracy?

Something that could have been done in the first place, anyway, and it has already taken place with various threads, particularly in the "Recordings" forum...(so far in a free, if not democratic, way).

Hi Willem,

Hi Willem,

I confirm that I did write to Gramophone, and have to date not received a response (apart from the automated one, which interestingly mentioned that I might not receive a further reply at all).
