Finding the right cartridge

I have just acquired a turntable--Goodmans GSP 360.  I have connected it to my Cyrus amp and find that the output from the current cartridge is too low.  Can someone recommed a reasonable quality cartridge that will be compatible with my Cyrus amp?

more information

I cannot find information on the output voltage of the cartridge. Is it an old model? As for sound output, did you connect it to the MM phono input of the amplifier, or to the line input? You do not mention which amplifier it is.

plugging it in properly!!

Your comment was very helpful.  I hadn't fiddled with my stereo set up for years and had overlooked the fact that there was a dedicated phono input connection.  When I changed over it worked just fine.  Thanks very much!

good news

That is good news. The phono input has a much higher sensitivity to make up for the very low output of a cartridge (because of the tiny movements in the small groove).

In addition the phone preamplifier stage also equalizes the frequency response by boosting lower frequencies. On vinyl, low frequencies are recorded at a drastically reduced level to prevent excessive movement of the stylus, and this is reverted in replay with the so-called RIAA equalization, boosting these low frequencies to reclaim a flat response. So your sound was not only very quiet, but it also lacked nearly all bass.

Because of the same limitation of the vinyl medium, the very lowest frequencies are usually cut off and bass above that is mostly mastered in mono rather than stereo. But since bass is RIAA boosted, the player's rumble is also boosted, hence the traditional rumble filter on old amplifiers. Clean really deep bass only became a reality with the CD.

I am glad you are now enjoying your system
