24 into 16 won't go

The point is sort of moot, as a standard CD player won't play a 24bit file.

If you do have a device able to output a 24bit datastream, then how the DAC handles it is down to that DAC's internal architecture. Some will play it at 24bit, others will upsample to make the most of the DAC chipset's resolution - and thus move spurious noise created in conversion even further out of the audible band.

16 bit

In your thought experiment you are listening to a 16 bit file in terms of audio quality, the weakest element in your chain.

thanks

Thanks to all. But if I am listening to a 16 bit file, the external dac does'not bypass the chipset of the internal dac of the 16-bit player. Then, it useless. At most it improves the quality of sound.

Thanks and best,

The digital output does bypass the internal DAC chipset of the player, being 'tapped off' the signal path before the data coming from the disc-reading mechanism gets to the player's own DAC.

Whether an external DAC will sound better than the player's own digital-to-analogue conversion is a different matter, and depends on the quality of the two converters, measures taken to tackle jitter between the two, and so on.

You may well find adding an inepxensive DAC to good CD player will be a case of 'different, but is it better?'
