New Years Concert...

Ok, well balanced orchestra, polished playing, but also a bit dull in the Blue Danube. No surprises in programming. What is your opinion about the 2015 New years concert from Vienna?

Makes a difference

It was good to have a diversion from the recent Wagner's, but then the Donau Waltz reminds of the RMD Canal which joins the river to the...Rhine. (Surely without RheinMaiDens)...

Usually there is an effort on these concerts to perform some works not programmed on previous New Year Concerts, so some "surprise" is attempted, but obviously conductor needs not to be "New"... I watched thru the "Great Performances" program.
A couple of works to mention for me were Opp. 234 and 333. I was reading some articles on turbines a few days ago and it was interesting to see images of them during Accelerations. As for 333, I have the Willi Boskovsky version from 12/30/78. (In the DG 2-CD Strauss collection with the signatures of the various conductors on the cover. Mehta's autograph does match, I might add). Boskovsky skips the first 99 measures, which equals the difference between the Op numbers.

Op. 333 perhaps is also interesting for some of us - Wagner has an reorchestration of it (WWV109).

Confetti shot in 2015 was more powerful than 1987 (op "324" then), though that moment (plus more) 28 years ago was perhaps more enjoyable.
