How musical are you? - experiment

BBC just launched an experiment to see whether musicality comes from one's genetics, environment, or a mix of both.  There's a bunch of tests they give in the experiment, but it's rather long, about 25 minutes or something.  You can take the test here.  I haven't taken it yet, but I think I will soon.

RE: How musical are you? - experiment

I took the test about a week ago and got a mixture of expected and surprising results - high score for the section where you have to follow a beat and remember a tune (although the part where you have to classify four different musical styles is ludicrous), low for musical creativity (quite correct), but surprisingly low for "emotional connection" with music, or whatever they actually call it.  Apparently this was because I don't use music to influence or change my mood (that's where beer comes in) or have background music on when I'm doing routine tasks.  But I wouldn't dream of insulting the goddess Music by using her as wallpaper or some sort of drug-substitute.  I comforted myself by imagining that Pierre Boulez would also have scored low for "emotional connection".  So take the test, by all means, but don't take the results too seriously.

Meh, it was odd. The results were pretty different to what I thought, but then perhaps I was thinking about it the wrong way.

And yes, the four sections thingy was a tad silly. Here's me expecting to see perhaps Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Modern.... but no, it's Jazz, Rock, Hip-hop, and something else. All of which you had to guess from about one second of playing!

But anyway, worth doing. Certainly fun, anyway, even if not always for the right reasons.

Bach is so cool.

RE: How musical are you? - experiment

I only fully got the point of some of the tests when they were finished and, like the previous people, I was bemused by the one second musical samples. Trying to tell two beat-driven types of music apart (hip-hop and, I think, dance) was beyond my ear. On the other hand I was given 100% for Musical Curiosity, 99% for Musical Perception and 94% for Enthusiasm for Music, so I thought that part was excellently conceived!

Incidentally Bach is indeed cool and he was picked as greatest ever composer in The New York Times. Read all about it here: http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/01/21/top-10-composers-the-final-list/?scp=1&sq=Top%2010%20composers&st=cse

......and the point is? Just absurd, glad to see the BBC using their funding on worthwhile crap.

What a joke. I feel sorry for anyone who thinks they need take some online test to see if their brains can comprehend music.
