Lydia Mordkovitch.

Sorry to read of the death of Lydia Mordkovitch who made many splendid recordings for Chandos and who in particular I thank for introducing me for the first time to Moeran's lovely concerto and Bax's Concerto together with an impressive Britten as an alternative to Ida Haendel.

Edward Greenfield, in his recent book described her as "one of the most underated violinists today yet she has made a whole series of superb recordings".

 Nick

Mordkovitch, a selective top violinist.

It is truly pity, Nick, that such a selective, top quality in sound (tone and volume) and expression violinist passed away but, most significantly, that she never got the attention and praise she deserved, at least to a full extent.

I have treasured most of her recordings, both in the mainstream but also in the more eclectic repertory. Her Bliss, Stanford, Dyson and Alwyn Violin Concertos were revelatory. Szymanowsky's Violin/Piano works along with Medtner's Violin Sonatas, Kabalevsky's Concerto and, by all means, her magnificent Shostakovich's Violin Concertos are some of her great recordings. However, I found her "Tribute to David Oistrach" disc as the most intimate and rewarding as a true "gift" to her mentor and as a testimony that she was a worthy heir of the great Master.

I will always remember her with utmost respect.
