Camaron, what you call "entirely external factors" do not constitute or result in "prestige". That's a very superficial view of the matter in question. How influential or how much impact a work can have to audiences and professionals is at least indicative of its substantive value and meaning.

I sincerely hope you do not put Schnittke on a par with Schubert or Bach. In any case, in the late 20th century, the media of all kinds have been developed in such a way that the impact of a work could be almost immediate almost anywhere in the world. Schnittke's Third Quartet was composed in 1983 and how far it has gone so far. Shostakovich's last two String Quartets were composed 10 and 9 years earlier respectively and they became almost instantly what can be called modern classics, performed and recorded often enough and being appreciated accordingly. His last Symphony likewise.

As for how many times I have heard the work in question, I can refer to the well-known saying "First impressions are the most lasting". With this I want to point out that, if a work sounds alienating or repulsive or meaningless and so on in the first encounter, it cannot grow on you at any time and no matter how many times you will listen to it. The lack of any melody, the manipulation of whatever styles and forms seem a more deceptive outcome than a genuine development of the Classical Music heritage.

Having said that I recognise that Schnittke has an established position as a leading figure of the late 20th century musical evolution and, in this respect, he deserves a reputation that has been built about him. However, like many others who tried to play, manipulate, reorganise, reinvent forms and styles of the past, he cannot have the influence and importance of composers like Shostakovich or Britten, who mastered the linkage of invention with the tradition and have been loved and appreciated to the highest degree.

Dear forum member, trust me the problem is nor "Mr. P". Perhaps and rather often, it is how some other posters react to different views or different style of writing. As for reconciliation, I am always ready and open to any friendly approach. I'm not that sure if the others are.

Finally, this "either do something or shut it down" sounds a bit patronising.

I don't know anything by Schnittke, Camaron. I gave some a try a few years ago and found it absolutely impossible to understand - except when it sounded like the soundtrack to a distopian thriller. Following your comments on the 3rd quartet, however, I had a listen and found it was not that difficult to follow. I will have another go and something may come of it, though I have very little experience in this kind of music. 

I haven't discovered much new music recently. I seem to be going through a consolidation phase - lots of re-listening. The same for books, too: lots of re-reading. I have no appetite for the new right now, though I suppose it will come back at some point.

Parla, Schnittke’s third string quartet has plenty of melody. Are we talking about the same music? "First impressions are the most lasting" is particularly bad advice or practice when it comes to Classical Music: we all know that all too often we need to persevere and break with first impressions, or we might get stuck with Chopin, Tchaikovsky and Johann Strauss.

Jane, I know no other music by Schnittke, although I am now hugely interested. I don’t know if you got your new headphones yet, but I’ve discovered that this very quartet is perfect to listen to with them on. In general chamber music is great, since there is that immediacy and spatial clarity of the instruments, but also the fact that by putting the headphones on and disconnecting yourself from “the world” you are sort of committing yourself to some level of concentration and focus on the music.

I don’t pretend to enter an endless discussion about Snittchke’s work relative value (I promiss!), but I think it is important to note, for possible unaware readers of this thread, that Parla’s opinion on it is either his own very personal one (nothing wrong with that) or a faulty understanding of the status of the work within the repertoire.

I ordered a slightly cheaper pair in the end, though they haven't arrived yet. They should be a step up from anything I have had before, so I will see how I get on with them. I am still tempted by the grados. I might cancel these other ones tonight........one thing: are they comfortable? I've read a few negative reviews about the itchy foam pads. 

choice of DAC

Jane, can one be of any help in your choice of a DAC to go with your new headphones? Happy new listening year in 2017 to you and the others who are "still around" on this forum.

By the way, did any of us make any New Year resolutions concerning our frustration with this forum and how we can all modify our behaviour in improving the quality of the "conversation" here?
