FM old hat

We stopped with FM many moons ago, but once upon a time we really enjoyed it. But there are still tuners for sale, especially in France which has excellent public broadcasting for its citizens.

Norway will soon stop all FM/AM broadcasting and all will be DAB, mostly at poor levels of sound quality. Pity Norwegian consumers!

Are we going down-hill or up-hill?

I enjoy it when youngsters listening to our analogue systems really enjoy music again and grab the LPs. Sales of LPs are up significantly, and downloads are down, so perhaps things are moving in the right direction.

As the hifi technician at my local dealer said this afternoon, Who needs streaming and play-lists. Perhaps best to get as much as we can from what we have which are our personal libraries of LPs, CDs.

I have just rediscovered old 45s and EPs from the 1960s.

Old cassettes sound good, and there is a chance I will return, like many others, to the large spool tape-decks of many decades ago.  A good Revox costs a fortune these days, must have a look in the attic. I did find an old Walkman in the garden shed, and it fetched a decent price at a car-boot sale.

As my long deceased mother used to say Variety is the spice of life.

She was quite right, although I was angry back in 1956 when she sat in a chair where I had placed a 78 of Elvis Presley recording of  Blue Moon.

Could I find a hi-res version?

Of Presley's Blue Moon? Yes, here.

garbage in garbage out

True, but it would be a waste. There is no point at all in reproducing at HD level  recordings that were originally done with a technology that was way worse than CD. It is impossible to restore information that was irretrievably lost.

his-res from 78 record

Thanks Andrew for the link but I would have to buy the album to get the one number I want. Have found a cheap CD from the original tapes, which does sound too bad.

As to Willem's comment, it would depend on the quality of the original tapes from which the 78, later 45s, LPs, and CDs were produced. I will endeavour to find an old LP and make a comparison.

But you are correct in saying that information not there originlly cannot be added to produce hi-res. Unless Andrew has other ideas on this.
