1960 Vienna Tristan:
During one of the piano rehearsals, Birgit Nilsson's necklace snapped, scattering pearls over the rehearsal room floor.
"Tell me," asked Karajan, scrambling around on his hands and knees, "is this stage jewellery or are they real pearls, bought with the phenomenal fees La Scala pays you?"
"No, they are very cheap and ordinary," replied Nilsson. "I bought them with your Vienna fees."
