A very underrated recording is the one with Radu Lupu and Edo de Waart/LPO on Decca. To me it is an ideal performance.
I also like very much the Brendel/BPO/Abbado recording. Very beautiful playing by Brendel.
Sorry I forgot to mention I was referring to the first concerto.
I am looking for some new recordings of these so, thank's for all good sharing and suggestions. I recently heard "piano 1" live with Andras Schiff and the Berlin Philharmonica, which was absolutely fantastic! One of the best concerts, the pianist and a great place and orchestra. There is a 1974 recording with Schiff of Brahms P1 but the 2015 live version was better (I like Schiff's soft flowing touch, there are really great recordings with Schiff playing Bach! The "well-tempered klavier", "six partitas" etc. Exceptionally good!). Brahms two piano concerts are also my favourite piano concertos (although Tchaikovsky's are also high on my list). I first listened to the two concertos by Helené Grimaud, which is also a good pianist and live recording. I like her piano playing as well.
