Help with Record Collection

I recently received a record player and 191 classical records.

I would love to know which ones are keepers - either because they are one of the top performances or they are not available as a cd or in hi-def digital audio.

I am a classical music novice and it's also my first shot at records - so I need help.

I put all the titles, album number, and record company in an Microsoft Excel and Corel WordPerfect file, but it doesn't look like I can attach the files here. Any ideas?

Thanks for your help!

Keeper

Hi dnickel,

I personally think keeping one copy of Cliburn's Tchaikovsky Concerto is enough.

LOL! Good Catch... I didn't realize I had doubles.

Any opinions on any other ones?

Thanks

It's difficult to say what's worth keeping without looking them over. I'd start off by judging what looks to be in the best (preferably flawless) condition and whether the record jacket is also in good shape. The London, Columbia and RCA recordings might stand out for their sound/recording quality.

The heavier the platter the better (this is my bias) although some flimsy 1970's vinyl does sound very good. My understanding is that early hi-fi stereo or mono is typically preferred to most later pressings. I would then try to determine which titles are hard to come by. And finally, what it is you like!

A used record store might agree to purchase from your collection depending on where you're located. I've been told that it's better to take two or three records at a time. Also, these used record stores aren't thrift stores so they don't want stacks of undesirable albums taking up room.

Hi again.

Actually, one is lsc 2252 and one is lm 2252

Which one is better to keep? lsc 2252 vs lm 2252

LM LSC

Looks like LSC is stereo and LM is for the monophiles.

Great - then I will keep the stereo one.

Thanks.

Thank you for all the information. I appreciate that.

However, I would only be wanting to sell the ones that aren't worth keeping, i.e. the performance is not considered that good.

At this point, it doesn't matter to me if the covers or the jackets are perfect. I am just interested in the music itself.

I guess I didn't want to invest the hours listening to stuff that isn't considered a good performance. As example, I have three versions of Ravel's Bolero - 2530 475,DGG,Ravel,Bolero,,
ARC1 3686,RCA,Ravel,Bolero,,
S 36916,Angel,Ravel,Bolero,,

I was just hoping that maybe someone knew if one of them was a keeper and the others were throwaways. Or maybe the three are all throwaways and I would be better off buying the version from xyz on CD and skipping the records all together.

Hopefully, that makes sense.

Thanks again

Lucky you. There look to be a

Lucky you. There look to be a lot of nice records, as well as some I personally would probably say good bye to.

I am not you, so I'm not going to be specific. My advice is to listen to the recordings yourself, and decide whether you like them. If you like them, keep and enjoy.

If you don't like them, sell them or give them to the charity shop.

Best wishes
