Wunderlich’s lyric tenor voice made him an ideal Mozartian but led him, too, into the Italian and lighter Wagnerian repertoire. He was also a noted Lieder singer. Despite his early death aged 35, Wunderlich left a fine legacy of recordings that included Mahler with Klemperer, Mozart with Böhm and Haydn with Karajan.
