New Year's Honours for the classical music world


The New Year’s Honours featured a number of figures from the classical music world. Knighthoods went to the director of the National Theatre, Nicholas Hytner – whose stage productions include work in the opera-house – and Dr Ralph Kohn, a philanthropist whose generosity has benefited many musical organisations. CBEs went to the mezzo Sarah Connolly, the pianist Peter Donohoe and the conductor James Loughran. The director Phyllida Lloyd also received a CBE, as did the chairman and CEO of the Universal Music Group Lucian Grainge. Graham Sheffield, artistic director of London’s Barbican Centre, also received a CBE. OBEs went to John Craig, chairman of the British Record Industry Trust, Kenneth Montgomery, principal conductor of the Ulster Orchestra and the film composer Rachel Portman. Marc Jaffrey received an OBE for Services to Music Education.
