The Listening Room: Episode 85 (18.11.19)

The Listening Room
Monday, November 18, 2019

The age of superb pianism continues with Brahms’s First Piano Concerto played (and, unusually, directed from the piano) by Lars Vogt (my guest on a recent Gramophone Podcast), harpsichord music played on the piano by Alexandre Tharaud, our Artist of the Year, Víkingur Ólafsson, performing the Second Piano Concerto by fellow Icelander Haukur Tómasson and, from a fine album of Cyril Scott, a Berceuse played by Nino Gvetadze. And staying with this year’s Award winners, I’ve included a couple of pieces from our Young Artist, Jakub Józef Orliński’s new Erato album 'Facce d'amore'. Vladimir Jurowski, who took charge of this year's Contemporary Award winner, Brett Dean's opera Hamlet, gather some of his LPO principals around him for Mozart's heavenly wind Sinfonia concertante - a wonderful example of collegial music-making of the highest order.

And talking of Award winners, though from previous years, the ever-wonderful Pavel Haas Quartet adds another composer to their magnificent catalogue - Shostakovich and three of his quartets. I've chosen the Seventh Quartet. The violinist Vilde Frang and her regular piano-partner Mikhail Lifits play Schubert.

Brooklyn Rider and Paul Barnes play Philip Glass's Piano Quintet, drawing some gorgeous sounds from this strking score. And sprinkled throughout this week's Listening Room, I've included a few songs by the wonderful Adèle Charvet with Susan Manoff at the piano. James Jolly
