The Chopin, however, is splendid throughout: from the start we can hear how Richard Harwood’s magnificent sustained tone is malleable enough to bring out the force of each melodic inflexion, and that Berner succeeds in giving a meditative, poetic character to every pianistic gesture. The long first movement (with repeat) maintains a compelling, passionate momentum. The recent recording by Natalie Clein and Charles Owen has a lighter touch; their accounts of the mercurial Scherzo and the finale, sweeping impetuously onwards, are particularly persuasive. Yet Harwood and Berner, with a more robust style, bring to the finale an intensity that matches their grand conception of the first movement.
The four short pieces are played with true feeling and, in the Popper, exceptional, precise, brilliance. The Potton Hall recording has a warm sound and natural clarity. For this fine young cellist, it’s an auspicious start to what I’m sure will be a distinguished career in the studio.
