Russell’s previous releases have tended to focus on a particular period or national style; “Art of the Guitar” takes us instead on a world tour, visiting such countries as Norway, France, Venezuela and Uruguay. We begin and end in Spain, Russell mediating an uneasy truce between dance and song in Albéniz’s colourful “Malagueña” from España while bidding a gentle farewell with Eduardo Sainz de la Maza’s smoothly flowing tremolo study Campanas del Alba.
There’s much to admire along the way. Russell’s virtuosity is most evident in showpieces like Arcas’s Fantasia on Themes from Verdi’s ‘La traviata’ and Mertz’s Fantaisie hongroise. Though it’s never actually showy: the same poise and clarity you find in Sor’s Variations on a Theme of Mozart and Debussy’s La fille aux cheveux de lin are also present here. Best of all, however, are the Grieg Lyric Pieces, featuring wonderfully expressive phrasing and a range of colours on offer that’s worth the price of the disc alone. Just listen to the Waltz, Op 12 No 2, or the dreamy Berceuse from Op 38. Without doubt, another outstanding release from a true artist of the guitar.
