Naxos’s Spanish Classics series gets ever moreirresistible. Diez melodías vascas by Jesús Guridi (1886-1961) ranks as the classic Basque orchestral work, each movement highly approachable inits melodic simplicity and remarkable in its range of orchestral colouring. Juan José Mena builds a fine climax in the sixth movement, but overall the interpretation falls short ofthe emotional tension and complete integration of the rival version in a Guridi compilationin Claves’s Basque music series. Both wringout the emotions more intensely than the lighter, airier version under Arámbarri (EMI, nla) or the more warmly outgoing one byPlasson (EMI – import only).
Una aventura de Don Quijote was composed for the tercentenary of the death of Cervantes and portrays the battle between Don Quijote and the gallant Biscayan in chapters 8 and 9 of Cervantes’s book. Here, too, I feel the new version cedes a little to the Claves interpretation incharacterisation. As for the other three pieces, I believe all are receiving their first recordings for CD. Así cantan los chicos is a beautiful three-part piece, setting children’s voices against a lightly scored accompaniment. En un barco fenicio portrays the voyage of Telemachus, son of Odysseus, in a Phoenician ship. Canta el gallo tempranero is a short soprano solo, exquisitely capturing the brightness of dawn.
Guridi’s orchestral writing is consistently effective. Whether or not you already have a compilation of his music, this latest is highly recommended.
