Two Kodaly classics. The composer's own performance of his Concerto for Orchestra and his charming Summer Evening have a delightful elegance and freedom, with no sense of virtuosity striven for but much authority and command achieved. Naturally the players have the music in their veins, and they play beautifully both for Kodaly himself, as do the Berliners for Fricsay one of Kodaly's finest interpreters. The recordings are good and clean. I do not quite understand why there are so many bandings in Summer Evening, but of course it does not matter when one is playing the whole work and it is a fault on the right side.'
