Author: David Fallows
It is joyful partly because it emphasizes simple scale passages and leaps more than Josquin's other cycles—with the striking exception, perhaps, of the Mass
The New London Chamber Choir bring out the joyful qualities of the music extremely well. They sing the work with a forward and clear sound, they succeed magnificently in keeping the textures clear and audible—even when the music moves into six parts for the last Agnus Dei—and they have no difficulties with the musical details. James Wood conducts with enthusiasm and tact. The recording is clear and even, always pleasant on the ear.
Briefly, if you are unfamiliar with Josquin, or if you disliked his music on one of those beefy old records and now think you should give him another chance, this is the record to buy. But do be careful about turning to the other side: Pierre de la Rue's Requiem is one of the most puzzling works of its generation (in some ways second only to Ockeghem's Requiem in that respect) and is not for the faint-hearted. The choir suitably change their tone for this work, but still do it skilfully; and John Milsom has established a new text that weeds out some of the eccentricities in Blume's old edition. Since so little of Pierre de la Rue's music has ever been recorded, it may have been a pity to lead with what seems his most problematic work; but then this record does at least give us a chance to come closer to it and face up to its difficulties.'
