Author: Nicholas Anderson
Leopold Mozart seems to have a greater appeal for them, yet here, too, there is more than a hint of world-weariness in the approach. The horn players throughout are skilful and produce some attractive sounds, especially in the upper register. There are rewarding sonorities in each movement of the Leopold Mozart Concerto in E flat but as interpretations these readings strike me as routine.
The booklet draws attention to Telemann's full-blooded music and Leopold's elegant galant style but these are features which sadly are barely present in the performances. Unless you must have all four of these works on a single disc I would choose the versions with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields directed by Iona Brown. It is not so much that the new ones are bad performances than that there is rather more to the Telemann works, at least, than these artists would lead us to believe. Recorded sound is good but the disc is not as generously filled as its two rivals.'
