Author: Marc Rochester
Generally the earlier works lack conviction, largely because the choral tone is too thick and cloying to articulate effectively the nimble textures of Schutz's Jauchzet dem Herren or the polyphonic intricacies of Tallis's 40-part motet. But neither does Richard Westenburg display the same measure of intuitive authority in the earlier music as he does in the more overtly romantic repertoire. Randall Thompson's prayerful Alleluia and Schoenberg's emotionally charged Friede auf Erden exert a powerful force on the heartstrings, with Westenburg firmly treading the fine line between delicate sensitivity and emotional abandon. It's especially good to have such a confident and self-assured account of Richard Strauss's all-too-rarely heard Deutsche Motette with its remarkable similarities with Rachmaninov's The Bells (both works were written in the same year). The almost operatic quality of the voices as well as Westenburg's spacious reading would yield these compelling results regardless of acoustic environment.'
